Youth Programs

Our mission is to make Boston the most connected city in America, and that starts with the youngest members of our community.

Cultivating curious minds.

We partner with schools and organizations across the city to encourage curiosity and connection through experiential learning opportunities at home, in the classroom, and in the community. We engage young people in activities that broaden their world view, deepen their empathy, and strengthen communication skills they need to succeed in school, at home, and, eventually, in today's economy.

WORKSHOPS

Through our Curiosity and Connection curriculum, we explore the importance of a curious mind versus a closed mind and connection versus isolation. Students reflect on their own experiences with stereotypes, and examine the power of stories to break down those stereotypes in society.

Then we dive into the mechanics of interviewing- how to introduce yourself, keep eye contact, listen closely, ask effective questions- before young people meet and interview community members about their lives. This inter-generational activity builds community even as it develops critical communication skills young people need.

STORY COLLECTING PROJECTS

Once they’ve participated in our workshop, teens can join our story collecting program, meeting neighbors they might not otherwise know, recording their stories, and sharing them with the wider world. We support them every step of the way.

Our young story ambassadors participate in everything from our pop-up story shops (at left) to community-based campaigns to capturing the voices of their elders.

FOCUS: Story collecting during Covid-19

Since March, we’ve engaged dozens of young people in our remote story collecting projects, easing their sense of isolation and strengthening their sense of purpose. These young story ambassadors have immersed themselves in community work, interviewing essential workers and elderly residents, amplifying their voices for the benefit of all. Here, senior Aunnesha Bhowmick interviews Abner Bonilla, a mail carrier.

What They’re Saying

Everyday Boston has been a lifesaver during this pandemic. My students were taught critical communication skills and then matched with essential workers and elderly residents to interview. It was magical.
